SeaGarden advances community-led regenerative marine farming to cut nutrient pollution and restore the South Baltic Sea.
Why SeaGarden
Across the South Baltic, coastal waters are under pressure from nutrient pollution, unsustainable resource use and limited cross-border cooperation. Eutrophication damages marine life, reduces biodiversity and threatens the communities that depend on clean water.
Community-based regenerative marine farming — cultivating native seaweed, aquatic plants and mussels — removes nutrients, improves water quality and increases biodiversity, without added feed or fertiliser. Well established in the western Baltic but underrepresented in the South Baltic, SeaGarden brings it here through joint frameworks, decision-support tools and practical guidance.
No feed, no fertiliser — just the sea's own species doing the work.
Communities grow native seaweed, mussels and aquatic plants on simple, low-cost lines — no feed, no fertiliser.
As they grow they take up the excess nitrogen and phosphorus that drive eutrophication straight out of the water.
Water clears, oxygen returns, and habitat and biodiversity recover in and around the farm.
The biomass is harvested — permanently removing those nutrients from the sea, for good.
A regenerative cycle — repeated season after season.

The SeaGarden website is now published at seagarden.ku.lt. The site sets out what regenerative marine farming is and why it matters for the South Baltic, introduces the six partners and the pilot Sea Gardens planned for Germany, Poland and Lithuania alongside the Danish forerunner farm, and explains how the work is organised across the four work packages. News and events are published as the project runs. The Knowledge Hub is where SeaGarden’s three flagship outputs will be published as they are completed: the Joint Framework Guidance, the Decision-Support Toolbox and the Technical Toolkit for Practitioners.
The SeaGarden consortium meets in Kerteminde, Denmark, on 23–24 September 2026 for the second part of the project kick-off. It is the first time the partners from Lithuania, Germany, Poland and Denmark come together in person, after the online kick-off in June. The two days pair working sessions with time on the water. Day one covers good practices for implementing community-driven regenerative marine farms — methodologies, site selection and monitoring. Day two turns to policy integration, guidance and knowledge infrastructure, and the co-design of the project’s Decision-Support Tool.
The SeaGarden consortium met online on 19 June 2026 for the project’s official kick-off, three weeks after the project started on 1 June. Partners from Lithuania, Germany, Poland and Denmark used the session to confirm governance arrangements, walk through the work plan and agree the first activities of the 36-month project. Klaipeda University leads the project and coordinates WP1 Management & Coordination. The meeting confirmed the leadership of the three thematic work packages: Gdynia Maritime University leads WP2, building the technical knowledge base behind the Decision-Support Toolbox and Technical Toolkit; Alles Alge leads WP3, establishing the pilot Sea Gardens; and EUCC – The Coastal Union Germany leads WP4, which anchors long-term impact through the SeaGarden Knowledge Hub, capacity building and policy alignment.
